Standard Cyber Essentials satisfies the LAA Criminal Legal Aid requirement. Cyber Essentials Plus - which adds an independent technical audit - goes further: independently verified controls for panel appointments with banks, insurers, and large corporates; stronger evidence for PII; and a higher level of assurance for institutional clients that specify it. As an IASME Approved Certification Body, we provide the independent audit your firm needs. Pre-Assessment Check included as standard. Fixed pricing, IASME fee included.
Law firms face cyber security requirements from multiple directions: regulatory obligations from the SRA and LAA, panel appointment conditions from institutional clients, and increasing scrutiny from professional indemnity insurers. The level of certification required depends on your firm's work and client base - but CE Plus is increasingly specified where independent verification matters.
Since October 2025, the Legal Aid Agency requires firms holding a Criminal Legal Aid contract to hold a valid Cyber Essentials certificate - a requirement introduced via the LAA's Data Security Requirements following the April 2025 LAA data breach. Standard CE satisfies this requirement. CE Plus exceeds it - it includes standard CE as a prerequisite and adds an independent technical audit on top. Firms seeking to demonstrate higher assurance to the LAA, or managing a mixed criminal and civil legal aid portfolio, benefit from the independently verified credential that CE Plus provides. See our CE for Law Firms page for standard CE requirements →
The SRA Code of Conduct and the SRA Accounts Rules oblige firms to protect client money and confidential data and to maintain proper systems - which in practice requires appropriate cyber security. UK GDPR Article 32 requires appropriate technical and organisational measures proportionate to the risk - legal sector data (privileged communications, financial transactions, personally sensitive matters) represents a high-risk profile. CE Plus provides independently verified technical evidence of those controls, which carries more weight than self-assessed CE in any regulatory or ICO context.
Major banks, financial institutions, insurers, and large corporates increasingly specify CE Plus rather than standard CE when appointing or reappointing law firms to their panels. This applies particularly in conveyancing, corporate, commercial, and financial services work. The requirement is set by the institution, not a regulator, but firms without the specified level can be filtered out of the panel application before their submission is evaluated on its merits.
Lexcel section 3.2 specifically names Cyber Essentials: practices should be accredited against it as part of their information management and security policy. The "should" means it is a strong recommendation rather than an absolute requirement - an assessor can pass a firm without CE certification if the policy and its required components are fully in place - but CE is the named standard. CE Plus exceeds the Lexcel baseline and provides a stronger independently verified credential for firms undergoing accreditation or renewal. Worth noting: Lexcel (and the SQM) are themselves preconditions for holding a legal aid contract with the LAA, which means the Lexcel-CE link connects directly back to LAA contract eligibility.

The right level depends on your work and client base:

CE Plus certificates are listed on the IASME public register. Panel administrators, institutional clients, and insurers can verify your certification status directly - giving your firm a verifiable, searchable record to include in panel applications, tender responses, and PII renewal submissions.
Major banks, insurers, and large corporates increasingly specify CE Plus rather than standard CE when appointing panel firms. Standard CE is a self-assessed questionnaire; CE Plus adds an independent technical audit that confirms the controls are actually in place - not just declared. Firms without CE Plus where it has been specified can be filtered out before their submission is evaluated on merit.
Legal sector data - privileged communications, financial transactions, personally sensitive client matters - represents a high-risk profile under UK GDPR Article 32. The independent technical audit in CE Plus provides a higher level of assurance than self-assessed CE, demonstrating to regulators, clients, and insurers that your controls have been independently verified, not just self-declared.
Data breaches and ransomware incidents are a significant driver of legal sector PII claims. CE Plus provides independently verified technical controls - a materially stronger evidential position than self-assessed CE at PII renewal. Bringing a CE Plus certificate to your renewal conversation gives your broker concrete, independently verified evidence that your controls have been tested, not just declared.
Law firms often have a panel application deadline or renewal date driving certification. We include a Pre-Assessment Check before the formal audit begins - so any gaps are identified and fixed before the assessor starts, not after a failed result that could delay a panel appointment or PII renewal.
We regularly work with law firms and understand the LAA, SRA, and institutional client context. We can advise on whether CE or CE Plus is the right certification for your situation, which scope covers your specific requirements, and how to present the certificate in panel applications and regulatory submissions.
You work directly with your Lead Assessor from first contact through to your CE Plus certificate. No helpdesk, no rotating contacts. When a panel administrator or insurer asks for a status update before a deadline, you can get a direct answer fast.
Four clear steps from enquiry to certification. Pre-Assessment Check included as standard - we identify any gaps before the formal audit begins.
Before the audit starts, we review your controls against CE Plus requirements in full. Any gaps are identified and resolved before the formal assessment begins - reducing the risk of issues on assessment day and protecting your panel or renewal deadline.
We confirm your assessment scope and asset list. You return an Audit Authorisation Form. Our assessor checks the scope aligns with your Cyber Essentials certificate boundary before the technical audit begins. Cloud services including Microsoft 365 must be included in scope.
Remote vulnerability scanning, internal device sampling via screen share, email and browser malicious content blocking tests, and MFA verification across cloud services. Entirely remote - no on-site visits required. Suitable for firms across multiple offices.
Your CE Plus certificate is issued by IASME, published on the public register, and emailed directly to you. Valid for 12 months - annual renewal required to maintain a current certificate. Panel administrators, institutional clients, and insurers can verify it instantly on the IASME registry.
